Nashik sits at the centre of the Maharashtra travel network: 169 km north-east of Mumbai, 210 km north of Pune, 56 km east of the Ozar airport and on the Mumbai-Howrah railway trunk line. During the Mela peak weeks of August and September 2027, every road into the city experiences severe congestion. What is normally a three-hour drive from Mumbai becomes five to seven hours on Amrit Snan day. This guide gives you the realistic plan, mode by mode.

For most pilgrims, the answer is rail. For most NRIs, it is fly-then-cab. For Maharashtra-based pilgrims, the bus network covers everything.

Route 1 • Highest volume
The most-travelled route to the Mela. Tapovan Express runs daily from Mumbai CSMT to Nashik Road in two and a half hours, the most popular option for budget-conscious pilgrims. AC sleeper buses from Mumbai Central run overnight. Private cabs via the Mumbai–Nashik Expressway take three hours outside peak times. Six modes available, with substantial variation in cost, time and comfort.

What happens to roads, trains and buses on the three Amrit Snan days. Plan around this, not against it.
The Nashik District Administration and Maharashtra Police implement a coordinated traffic plan on each Amrit Snan day. Vehicle access into the Panchavati ghat zone is restricted from midnight to noon. Buses are rerouted to designated drop-off points. Trains operate full capacity but station overflow is significant.
→Mumbai–Nashik Expressway: Expect 2–4 hour delays from Friday evening through Sunday on Amrit Snan weekends. Heavy goods vehicles banned from 6 PM Friday to 6 AM Monday.
→Nashik Road station: Operates at 3–5x normal pilgrim throughput. Plan 60–90 minutes from train arrival to reaching your accommodation, including dedicated pilgrim shuttle services.
→Inner Panchavati zone: Pedestrian-only from midnight before until noon on Amrit Snan day. No private vehicles, no auto-rickshaws within 1.5 km of Ramkund. Walk-in only.
→Trimbakeshwar road: On 12 September, the Nashik–Trimbakeshwar road experiences extreme congestion from 4 AM to 2 PM. Plan to stay overnight in Trimbakeshwar if attending the Shaiva snan.
→Ozar airport: Limited flight slots; book at least 60 days ahead for Mela-week dates. The 56 km from airport to Nashik takes 1–2 hours on snan days.
→Best practice: Arrive at least 24 hours before your bathing day. Do not attempt same-day in-and-out travel from Mumbai or Pune. The traffic and crowd density makes this dangerously stressful for senior pilgrims and children.
IRCTC reservations open exactly 120 days before journey date. For peak Mela trains, tickets sell out within hours. Set a calendar reminder.
Nashik Road (NK) is 8 km from Ramkund. Devlali (DVL) is 15 km, further, less pilgrim shuttle service and tighter road access on Mela days.
The Expressway runs 5-7 hour journey times Friday 4 PM to 11 PM during Mela weeks. Travel Thursday evening or Saturday early morning instead.
Local auto-rickshaws are fine within Nashik, but do not use them for the 28 km to Trimbakeshwar or anywhere outside city limits. Hire a verified private cab instead.

Once you arrive, how to actually move around the city and to Trimbakeshwar.
Auto-rickshaws are the default for short distances within Nashik. Metered fares apply officially but during Mela days expect to negotiate. From Nashik Road station to Panchavati is typically ₹250–₹400; from any premium hotel on Gangapur Road to Ramkund is ₹150–₹300.
App-based cabs (Ola, Uber) operate in Nashik with reasonable availability outside Mela peak hours. During the three Amrit Snan days, expect 30–60 minute wait times and significant surge pricing. Pre-book if possible.
Pilgrim shuttle buses are operated by the Nashik Municipal Corporation specifically for Mela days, connecting Nashik Road station, Sadhu Gram and the Panchavati zone via designated routes. Free during peak hours, frequent service. Watch for signage at Nashik Road station upon arrival.
Private cab for Trimbakeshwar is the recommended option for the 28 km journey, ₹1,200–₹2,500 round trip outside Mela days, double that during peak. Hire through your hotel or via Savaari for verified operators.
Pune, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, covering ninety percent of inbound pilgrim flow outside Mumbai.
ROUTE 2 · 210 KM · 4–5 HRS
The second-highest volume route to the Mela. Bus dominates here, direct AC sleepers from Pune Station, Swargate and Shivajinagar run hourly. Train requires a Mumbai connection (Pune → Mumbai → Nashik), adding 4–6 hours. Private cab via NH60 is straightforward in four hours; the route avoids the worst expressway congestion that affects Mumbai-origin travel.
ROUTE 3 · 1,400 KM · 4–28 HRS
Flight-plus-cab is by far the most efficient option from Delhi. Direct flights to Nashik (Ozar airport, ISK) operate three days a week with IndiGo; otherwise fly Mumbai or Pune and connect by cab or train. Punjab Mail and other Mumbai-bound trains stop at Nashik Road, 24-28 hour journey, ideal for budget pilgrims who want to avoid air travel.
ROUTE 4 · 1,000 KM · 15–22 HRS
The South Indian pilgrim segment. Flights via Mumbai dominate, Bangalore → Mumbai is 1.5 hours, then 2.5-hour train to Nashik Road. Direct rail (Udyan Express, Vasco Da Gama Express) takes 16-22 hours. Volvo bus through Sholapur is uncomfortable for the distance and not recommended unless budget is the absolute priority.
ROUTE 5 · 700 KM · 10–14 HRS
Direct overnight trains from Secunderabad and Kacheguda to Nashik Road run daily, Devagiri Express and others, 12-hour journey, the most pilgrim-friendly option from the Telugu states. Direct flights to Nashik via Mumbai are quick but expensive. Long-haul AC bus exists but is rough at this distance.
ROUTE 6 - FLIGHT DEFAULT
At 1,280 km, the answer from Chennai is simple, fly to Mumbai, take the Tapovan Express. The richer question is the Jyotirlinga circuit. Three of the twelve Jyotirlingas are in Maharashtra and reachable on one trip built around the Nashik Kumbh.
ROUTE 7 - LONGEST HAUL
At ~1,680 km, Kolkata is the longest haul of all, but it has a real direct 30-hour train via Nagpur and a deep rail-travel tradition to match.

ROUTE 9 - FLEXIBLE ROAD TRIP
The Mumbai–Nashik Expressway makes self-driving one of the most flexible ways to reach the Kumbh, about three hours and ₹2,200 on a normal day. The route, the costs and the one hard rule: don't try to drive on snan morning.
