The Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority has announced new safety measures ahead of Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) will conduct a detailed survey of landslide-prone areas around Nashik and Trimbakeshwar to identify high-risk locations and recommend preventive measures for pilgrim safety.
The authority is strengthening its disaster preparedness by planning for 17 potential disaster scenarios, including 10 natural and 7 human-made emergencies. Since the Nashik Kumbh Mela takes place during the monsoon season, officials are giving special attention to risks such as heavy rainfall, flooding, landslides, and earthquakes.
As part of this initiative, five earthquake monitoring stations will be established in the Trimbakeshwar region. These stations will help scientists study underground geological movements and provide valuable data for long-term disaster management and infrastructure planning.
According to Kumbh Mela Commissioner Shekhar Singh, the GSI team is expected to begin a fresh inspection of vulnerable locations in early August. The authority will provide updated GPS coordinates and site photographs to support the survey and help identify areas requiring immediate preventive action.
The decision follows this year's heavy monsoon, which caused flooding, submerged bridges, disrupted transportation, and triggered landslides in parts of Nashik district. Mild earthquake tremors were also reported in Suragana, Peth, and Dindori talukas, highlighting the importance of enhanced monitoring before the 2027 Kumbh Mela.
